Is JPEG and JPG the same thing?

Yes. JPEG is the format name; .jpg and .jpeg are just different file extensions for the same format.

Does this add transparency to my JPEG?

No. The original has no transparency — PNG just supports it. To add transparency you need a background remover.

Why would I convert JPEG to PNG?

Most often to prevent further generation loss while editing, or because a system you're uploading to requires PNG.
